Critical Care Unit, Belfast City Hospital

The lighting objective was to incorporate a control system which mimics the varying colour temperatures of natural daylight over a 24hr period ( from 3000K to 6500K) to maximise patient benefit from what is known as the circadian rhythm.
This was accomplished using the Thorlux Colour Active range together with the Thorlux Skydome for open areas and the Thorlux GP Linear High Dependancy for the bed bays, giving outstandingly high uniformity and a shadow-free working plane for staff.
Each bay has simple manual dimming controls with preset levels and a one-touch crash switch which will bring the bay lights to maximum output (1000 lux+) in emergency situations with a master crash switch at the nurse station for the full ward.
